Muscle contraction and exercise are critical for peripheral nerve growth and innervation. Studying this interplay is challenging given the difficulty of decoupling mechanical from biochemical stimulation of muscle and neuronal cells. A recent paper from Advanced Healthcare Materials by Bu and co-workers addresses that challenge by developing a system that allows an on-demand mechanical or biochemical stimulation of motor neurons.
